In October 2008, the rules regarding planning permission in a loft space changed. This change introduced the term permitted development. Permitted development enables you to carry out certain works to your home, without the need to submit a planning application. However, to take the permitted development route with your loft conversion your build must meet a set of criteria. If your build fails to meet this criterion then you will have to apply for household planning permission.

For most homeowners, their proposed loft conversion will fall under permitted development rights. But, there are exceptions, if your home is listed in a designated area. The designated areas which will restrict your permitted development rights are:

– A Conservation Area
– A National Park
– An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
– A World Heritage Site or
– The Norfolk or Suffolk Broads

How Do I Apply For Planning Permission?

Applying for planning permission can be carried out using the planning portal.
